American film, television and stage actor James Van Der Beek turns thirty-five years old today. Can Der Beek was born in Cheshire, Connecticut, the son of Melinda, a former dancer and gymnastics studio manager, and James Sr., a cellular phone company executive and professional baseball pitcher. The oldest of three children, he has a brother, Jared (born 1979) an a sister, Juliana (born 1981). He attended Norton Elementary School, Dodd Junior High School, and the Cheshire Academy. He was an honours student and excelled at football until an injury sidelines his budding career. In its own way his sporting injury proved serendipitous, as it led him to take up acting.

At the age of 15, he asked him mother to take him to New York City to get an agent and try his hand in professional acting. He made his professional debut in the New York premiere of Edward Albee's play Finding The Sun at the Signature Theatre Company in which he played the role of Fergus. Both he and the production received good reviews. Aged 17, while still in high school, he performed in the musical Shenandoah at the Goodspeed Opera House, and made his feature film debut with a bit part as a bully in the teen-orientated 1995 film Angus. The following year, he shot a small role on the independent film I Love You, I Love You Not. Although he attended Drew University, he dropped out to pursue acting.

Ultimately, though, it was his starring role in teen drama television show Dawson's Creek, which premiered in January 1998 and he played until May 2003, that gave Hames his big break. The shows success with critics and audiences alike propelled him and his fellow cast members into the limelight, and soon he secured his first major film roles. First in the little seen Harvest (1998), and then the football comedy drama Varsity Blues (1998). The new millennium saw his image, which up to that point had been built on the squeaky-clean small town boy image, take a decidedly more edgy feel. The Rules of Attraction (2002) was directed by Pulp Fiction collaborator Roger Avery and was based on a novel by American Psycho author Brett Easton Ellis. Playing college student / drug dealer Sean Batemen, the film was an initial box office failure, but then found a cult following on DVD.

Since then, James has been kept continuously busy in a number of television appearances - like Ugly Betty (2007), One Tree Hill (2008-2009), Medium (2009) and Mercy (2010) - as well as made for television movies. Later this year, his is set to appear in the movie Backwards, about a fiercely competitive rower who fails to make the Olympic boat for the second time. James lists his hobbies as playing the guitar, sleeping, staying with his friends and playing sports. He lives in New York, and is quotes as saying: "I love New York. Everyone is so busy with their own lives - and no one is interested in some Hollywood celebrity walking past in downtown Manhattan. That's why it's my favourite city. You can do what you want without attracting a crowd of curious onlookers." He has also subsequently become famous for his website, which includes Van Der Beek himself acting out famous internet memes.

New iPad Launched: Stronger, Clearer, Faster

The world's best selling tablet computer received a major overhaul today, becoming the first Apple product to connect to next-generation 4G mobile networks and gaining a high-definition screen, more graphical grunt, voice dictation and a significantly better camera for the same price as the old model. But Australians will not be able to use the iPad's new speedy 4G connection, which is incompatible with the country's only 4G network, when it arrives in local stores on March 16. Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook revealed the third iTab in San Francisco early this morning, in a performance that will be judged as his first real test as head of the company after he took over from founder Steve Jobs.

Mr Cook said the iPad had created a new category of tablet that Apple would "redefine" again with the new edition iPad. "We think that iPad is the poster child of the post-PC world," Mr Cook said. "The momentum behind Apple has been incredible and has surprised almost everyone. We sold 15.4 million in the last quarter alone. We sold more iPads in the fourth quarter of last year than any PC manufacturer sold of their entire PC line worldwide." The new iPad will be the first Apple to use a 4G (LTE) mobile internet connection that could deliver a speed boost of up to five times that of current networks. Unfortunately, it is not equipped to work with Australia's first 4G network, offered by Telstra, as it uses a different frequency (1800 MHz) to 4G networks available in the United States.

Other than 4G compatibility, the new iPad's most obvious upgrade is its 9.7 inch (24.6 cm) screen, which now features double the resolution (2048x1536) to a high definition Retina display as seen in the iPhone 4. It will also feature a more powerful processor - a 1.5 GHz dual-core A5X chip with quad-core graphics processing - that will enable the use of more demanding apps, including video-editing software and games. The new iPad also features a significantly better rear camera that now offers a backlit sensor, 5-megapixel resolution and hybrid infra-red filter for better colour reproduction, as well as voice dictation that is designed to recognise the Australian accent. The new iPad has retained it's original US price, starting at $US499. [Wifi only iPad prices for Australia: 16GB $539, 32GB $649, 64GB $759).

Apple has sold more than 55 million iPads since its April 2010 launch, dominating the fledgling market. Despite increased competition from Samsung, Motorola, Sony and ASUS, its predicted Apple will continue to lead the category this year with 69 million tablet sales compared to just 22 million Google Android-run tablets, even though its rivals are closing the hardware gap. Apple also revealed an upgraded Apple TV set-top box at the event that will support full high definition movie and TV downloads, up from a current resolution of 720p. The small black box will also come with a new menu featuring options resembling iPod icons. It will be launched in the US on March 16 for $US99.

"I was always very different from my family and my surroundings when I was younger, in a lot more ways than just sexual orientation," says Jay Brennan. "For some reason, I've always been a bit of a misfit and seen the world much differently than those around me." Brannan is a fiercely independent artist, writing and producing his own music while actively managing his career. "Currently, I am gearing up for an album release and a world tour," he explains, "so I'm basically on computer all day and night, emailing people, coming up with ideas and plans, booking shows, booking my travel, interacting with fans online, posting videos, designing posters and T-shirts and album artwork, looking for other great people who might want to be a part of my team. The list is endless, and it can be overwhelming."

Also on his mind is a Genie nomination for his song My Love My Love, which he contributed to the 2011 film Cloudburst, an festival-circuit favourite starring Olympia Dukakis. Thom Fitzgerald, Cloudburst's writer and director, had shared some segments of the film with Brannan, who was inspired by the story of an older lesbian couple escaping a nursing home in Maine to be legally married in Canada. "It's an odd song," says the singer songwriter, "as it doesn't even have a chorus, so I wasn't sure how he would react, but I guess that really makes sense for the characters. I was so surprised when he emailed me on the day the nominees were announced."

The evening prior to the Genie Awards, Brannan will take to the stage at Lee's Palace with Canadian musician and personality Sook-Yin Lee, Brannan's co-star in John Cameron Mitchell's explicit 2006 comedy-drama Shortbus (Brannan played an ex-model and musician Ceth and contributed his song Soda Shop for the soundtrack). "I will play a bunch of songs from my new album and, of course, the song from Cloudburst, as well as some new covers I've been learning," Brennan says. The Lee's Palace show is the first in Brannan's latest tour, which which will take him through the United Kingdom, France, Spain and the Netherlands promoting his new album, Rob Me Blind. "I can't wait for people to hear this album," Brannan says. "It's produced by a brilliant man named David Kahne, who has worked with people like Paul McCartney, The Bangles, Regina Spektor, Kelly Clarkson, Lana Del Rey, Ingrid Michaelson ... I could literally list people forever."

Brannan is one young gay man who doesn't necessarily subscribe to the It Gets Better philosophy. "The one thing that you can count on is that nothing stats the same forever," he says. "When things suck, they will eventually suck a little less. And when things are great, something will eventually happen that is painful or frustrating or confusing or challenging." That's why he writes songs that are specific, dealing with issues like unrequited love, sadness and sexuality. He believes this honesty os what makes his work universally appealing. The self-identified misfit says, "I try to share my honest experiences through both my words and my music, and I think that's what people respond to."

Lifesavers With Pride at Sydney Mardi Gras Parade

The Lifesavers With Pride crew are a highlight of every Sydney Mardi Gras Parade and this year was no exception. Aussie blogger Shannon (above left) recently shared his experience as a gay lifesaver regular on the night. This years Sydney Mardi Gras was so much fun that I wish every day could be Mardi Gras. The Mardi Gras Festival actually runs over two weeks and the Parade and Party are the culmination of 2 weeks of cultural events and parties. Being a Melbourne lad I was lucky enough to be able to head up for the final weekend. This year I travelled up with some really great friends and although we all had our own events to go to it was great to be able to share the experience this year with them. About a month ago I was talking to my friend Andy about the parade and how much fun it was. We made the decision right there on the spot, having both been lifesavers to sign up and march with the Lifesavers With Pride.

The day started of much like any other. I woke up, nursed my morning glory and settled in to check my emails and the blog. After three days of rain I was hopeful that the sun would finally show itself but was content to be happy with the grey but dry day outside my window. I kept the day pretty low key. If you have ever been to Mardi Gras you will know that conserving your energy for the big event is the way to go. I spent the day making the final adjustments to my speedo (the size they gave me was too big), shopping for protein bars and napping. Unfortunately the rain didn't hold off, but it did nothing to dampen the spirits of the marchers. We huddled together under umbrellas and rain ponchos, and danced to keep warm. The parade this year consisted on 134 floats and 9000 people watched by 300,000 onlookers and even more world wide watching on television online. It is one of the largest celebrations of GLBTIQ culture in the world.

The Mardi Gras Party this year sold out 15,000 tickets and was an absolute killer party featuring performances by Chicane, Sneaky Sound System, Kylie Minogue and a stellar line up of international DJ's. Ru Paul made a brief appearance before getting the name of the event wrong and making a quick exit. I have to admit that I did not intend to go to the party this year but the lure of Queen Kylie was too much to resist and I was not disappointed. We sweltered in the RHI Hall. Sweat was stinging my eyes and near naked bodies were pressed against each other as everybody strained to catch a glimpse of our Diva. The energy at this years party was one of love and the happy vibes seemed to carry through the night. The infinite love them was well and truly being enjoyed and I scored a pash on more than one occasion with a sexy Sydney boy who decided to spend the evening partying with me and my speedo. This years Mardi Gras was definitely another life time experience.

A first look at footage of a much-vaunted gay relationship in video game Mass Effect 3 has emerged ahead of the game's general release tommorow. Bioware's Mass Effect series charts the futuristic adventures of Systems Alliance Commander Shepard as he or he, depending on the players preference, tries to defeat a race of hostile machines. A lesbian love scene was included in the first game of the series but there was no option of male characters to pursue same-sex relationships. Star Wars: The Old Republic, a online role-playing game based in the Star Wars universe and developed by Bioware, came under fire from the Family Research Council for its plans to include a gay storyline. In that case, Bioware has been commended for listening to the gaming community after one of the moderators on its forum reportedly told fans in 2009 that the term "gay" did not exist in the Star Wars universe. Mass Effect 3's executive producer Casey Hudson, told XBox360: "We wanted to take a step towards responding to some of the feedback we'd had, things people have asked for. We always do that. And to be more inclusive. So we do have same-sex relationships for make and female."

Fashion Stylist Brad Goreski's Nasty Coke Habit

While we might never be sure what combination of substances keeps his old boss Rachel Zoe functioning, Brad Goreski (pictured here by fashion photographer Terry Richardson, seen with Brad in the picture below) admits in a new memoir that at one point it was cocaine that he himself struggled with. Goreski was nineteen and in college when he first tried the drug, according to his memoir, BornTo Be Brad. Goreski, who experimented with booze, pot and ecstasy in high school, succumbed to a harrowing cocaine habit for years. At age 23, he was both exhausted and shockingly thin. Excerpted recently at USMagazine.com;

"I needed to get help. It was early on a December morning. I was in our bathroom, staring in the mirror, and I didn't recognise myself. Finally I felt the weight of the situation," Goreski writes. "I told myself, 'You can carry on like this, and drugs will be your life.' I wasn't doing anything with my life except wasting it." Goreski's then boyfriend Nick told him, "You don't need to stop drinking, You just need to stop using cocaine." Goreski knew he couldn't get sober living with Nick and called his parents from a pay phone "in the dead of winter."

"I was crying in heaving sobs, saying that I need to get sober, that Nick and I were breaking up," Goreski writes. "And I was fine for another few months, going to AA meetings. Until I saw Nick at a club making out with someone else. I fell off the wagon [then] forced myself back to AA. It was May 3, 2001. I was determined to stay sober," Gorenski writes. "This was day one: the first day of the rest of my life."

On Chris landing Thor: "Look, Chris is six and a half years older than me so there's this thing where if I'd got Thor, that would have been weird. The way I look at this is, better Chris than someone else. Believe me, Chris and I spent most of our lives beating each other up. At this point, we're just happy not to be fist fighting over who gets the front seat."

On missing home: "My family and friends back in Australia have missed this part of my life; and it's been a big part. That's tough. I'm growing up without them. My parents don't Skype. It's tough with the time difference. I miss Australia a lot."

Douglas Booth learned the hard way that 140-character musings can quickly get out of hand. While he might not be famous in the US for his tweets to become controversial, at home in London, the 19-year-old doesn't have that luxury, so he recently cancelled his Twitter account. "If I put anything in the public space, then the tabloids are usually all over that; they feel like they have a certain right to tear me apart," Booth says over a glass of orange juice in the lobby of a Los Angeles hotel. "But if I don't give them anything, then they have no right to talk about my private life." It's no wonder that Booth's personal life is of interest, though. He has modelled in several campaigns for the luxury English label Burberry, and in October 2010 he appeared on the front cover of Gay Times magazine. And the young actor has already taken on a number of challenging roles, including Boy George, makeup and all, in the 2010 movie Worried About the Boy, and Christopher Isherwood's lover, Heinz Neddermeyer in last years Christopher and His Kind.

The time when that sort of fame is limited to the UK is about to end. This spring, Booth's photo should end up taped to plenty of high school lockers thanks to his turn as Miley Cyrus's bad-boy love interest in the forthcoming LOL, an adaption of a French film about a teenage girl's rebellion. A brainier set will know him thanks to the BBC's latest costume drama miniseries, Great Expectations, which has been a runaway hit in the UK. If that's not enough, Booth is teaming up with Downton Abbey mastermind Julian Fellowes - who gave Booth his first professional role in 2009's From Time to Time - for Romeo and Juliet, a Carlo Carlei-directed visit to Verona.

All of this work leaves the London native with little time to worry about gossip, like the rumours, fueled by - what else - Twitter, that he's seeing Great Expectations costar Vanessa Kirby, "I have things going on in different countries," he says. "you know, things come out here, then over there, Romeo and Juliet is getting buss on both sides of the pond, but it doesn't really effect me. I don't have time to think about who's talking about what. I just want to do a decent job and then move on." Next, he'll be moving on to Life at These Speeds, a Sam Rockwell-produced version of the Jeremy Jackson novel about a high school track star who sublimates his grief from a friends tragic death with running. True to form, Booth says he's eager to do the best work he can. "Its not one of those things where you can fuck it up," he says. "You either have to do it, and give it 100 percent, or just not do it all all."

Cruising Uncensored - Anyone Up for a Squirt?

Grindr has over 3 million users worldwide, 100,000 plus of which are located in Australia. So it will be interesting to watch newcomer Squirt Mobile ...

The crew behind the men-for-men site squirt.org is introducing a revamped mobile site, called Squirt Mobile, the first version of which was launched in 2009. "Apps like Grindr and Scruff has changed the market and the way people want to access these sites," says Jeffrey Freeman, Squirt's web marketing manager. "It's clear people are adopting a new methodology to cruising." Attila Szatmari, Squirt's digital business director, says a team of about a dozen developers has been mapping out "the logic of cruising" since last summer. The have based the new format on where and when to find men who are looking to hook up for sex. The began with adopting the GPS location tech used so successfully by mobile apps like Grindr and Scruff. "In the old Squirt Mobile site, you had to rely on what people were entering as their postal codes," Szatmari says. "Now it's a similar location-based approach: you see guys around you." A new feature is the ability to toggle between views: either a grid of photos like Grindr or a scrolling list of mini-profiles.

One of the unique things about Squirt Mobile is that member photos feature full-frontal nudity. That nudity is something Apple, for example, forbids for mobile applications available on the iTunes store. "Apple has some guidelines," Grindr CEO Joel Simkhai told Xtra Magazine last summer. "They've got their rules. They're fairly explicit about profanity, nudity, overall sexuality. We have to obey those guidelines." Squirt Mobile, however, can be accessed via virtually any mobile web browser, making it accessible with almost any mobile device. "You can use the same full range of images you'd use on a regular desktop site - more images than mobile apps: your face, your penis, your ass," says a proud Szatmari. "Whatever you think is your best feature, that what you're able to show."

"Until now, the Squirt Mobile site was only available to paid members, but it will soon be available to everyone, though only members will be able to skim through unlimited profiles. We're now at a stage where we're ready to roll it out to the rest of the world, starting with our current members," says Freeman. "We rolled it out to the United Kingdom first to test-market and see how people responded to it. We actually have a fairly decent audience in the UK." Szatmari says he us pleased that a significant 41 percent of current users say Squirt Mobile is "more effective or much more effective than its competitors." Freeman says "users wanted more search options, especially for other cities they may visit in the future. If you're in a new city, you can click on 'Cruising' and see the places that are closest to you." Ultimately, he adds, the Squirt Mobile site "supports the cruising culture like no other site can." Szatmari says, "Our website is a hookup site. We don't sugarcoat that. Grindr is too chit-chatty." He says, "When people want to get laid, they'll go to squirt."

Some wore sparkly costumes, some wore uniforms and other wore pretty much nothing at all, but all those who took part in this year's gay and lesbian Mardi Gras were united by one message - equality. Organisers say more than 9,000 people marched in this year's parade to celebrate the gay and lesbian community. An estimated crowd of over 300,000 watched the procession along Oxford Street, including guest of honour singer Kylie Minogue (pictured), who also performed at an after party. Minogue took to Twitter, thanking over and over again everyone who marched in the parade. "Thank U THANK YOU @SydneyMardiGras & Mardigrasland ... YOU were amazing ... I am #happytiredwiredrelievedamazedgrateful."

The Parade featured floats from religious groups and social groups, as well as a contingent of police, fire fighters and ambulance workers. And Mardi Gras veterans, including Dykes on Bikes, got the crowds cheering early in the parade. Almost all the floats had the same message - equal rights for everyone. "They need to actually make marriage equality for everybody. It's how it should be," parade marcher Robert said. "It should be for everybody, no issues," Isaac said. Politicians were not going to be left out of festivities, with Sydney Major Clover Moore, who has supported the parade since 1986, attending.

The ALP was also represented with the Rainbow Labor marriage equality float, with Tanya Plibersek on board. And the Liberal Party also had their spot in the parade. Last year Barry O'Farrell announced that he would allow a conscious vote for NSW Liberal members on the issue of gay marriage. Prime Minister Julia Gillard allowed the same for her Labor Party members, resulting in the party voting in favour of the move. Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese, who has marched in the parade for the past 25 years, says while a lot of reforms have passed in that time, there is still more to be done. "What we see gradually is a shift of community attitudes over time, a recognition that by giving people - who happen to be same-sex couples - equal rights, it doesn't actually take away from the rights from heterosexual couples in our community," he said.

Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, who confessed she was "not a virgin" of the Mardi Gras, said the parade was an opportunity to celebrate how far the marriage equality campaign had come in parliament. "We have several bills is parliament," she said. "Tony Abbott now has to step out of the way and let his party catch up with the people." The parade is an annual event by the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, which aims to raise the visibility of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex communities. Senator Hanson-Young said the Mardi Gras was an important event not just for those involved but for the nation. "It (the parade) has grown to the point where it's not just the Sydney community but the whole Australian community saying yes, let's celebrate diversity," she said. The 34th annual Mardi Gras is expected to inject around $30 million into the economy.

Sydney Mardi Gras - From Protest to Celebration

2012 sees Sydney's 34th Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras - festival, parade and celebration that has become an important part of the city's image, both at home and abroad, as a centre of gay and lesbian culture in Australia. It's supported by government, widely discussed and portrayed in the media, and prominent in tourist guides, histories and travel writing about Sydney. But it wasn't always a part of the mainstream, as Emma Graham from the Dictionary of Sydney explains below:

Solidarity and Police Brutality

24th June 1978 was International Gay Solidarity Day, called worldwide to commemorate the Stonewall Riots that had rocked New York City in 1969 and were widely regarded as a starting point for gay rights activism. Sydney's contribution was to be a morning street march, an afternoon public meeting, and a parade in the evening. When the crowd gathered for the parade, heavy-handed police intervention led to a change of route, and further conflict led to a violent confrontation with police, in which 53 people were arrested. Later that week, police provoked further protest by closing the courts where the charges were to be heard, and more arrests were made. The Sydney Morning Herald published the names of those arrested, leading to involuntary outing at a time when male homosexual acts were still criminal offences. Some of those charged lost their jobs as a result. Throughout the rest of the winter, follow-up protests drew further police response, and the treatment of gay demonstrators became a major civil liberties issue. The repercussions of that first march included repeal of the Summary Offences Act in 1979, limiting the powers of the police in public places, and eventually the decriminalisation of male homosexual behaviour in 1984.

Resistance and Survival

Meanwhile, the parade continued, with decreasing police harassment and more public involvement. In 1979, the theme of 'Power of Darkness' was given to the parade, and despite a large police presence, no arrests were made. In 1981 the parade was moved to February, and given the name Sydney Gay Mardi Gras. While political differences were played out in the organising committees over the years, the popularity of the occasion, both for participants and spectators, continued to grow, and the Mardi Gras came to have a secure and special place in Sydney's cultural life. It has also become a major tourist attraction. From the mid 1980's, as AIDS decimated the gay community, the Mardi Gras became a symbol of courage and solidarity more than ever. The 1985 parade was titled 'Fighting For Our Lives', and went ahead despite calls from anti-gay activists that it be banned. Since that time HIV positive groups have had an important presence.

Community and Family

The communities that sustain Mardi Gras have always been varied. Lesbian activists were part of the first protest in June 1978, and a number were arrested. Since then, people who identify as queer, transgender, bisexual or intersex have also taken part and been recognised in the evolving names of the organisation and the event. Costumes, floats and displays have drawn on Sydney's long drag tradition, and on gender-play of other kinds. The flamboyant, explicit and exuberant nature of the parade meant that conservative media organisations were reluctant to cover it in the early years, and it received much less media notice than its size and popularity warranted. In 1994, the parade and festival were themed 'We Are Family', and the ABC filmed it for delayed broadcast. Now proudly led by the Dykes on Bikes, the parade received the highest ratings in ABC history to that time, and has since been broadcast on commercial television as well.

Into the Mainstream

By the twenty-first century, the festival and parade had become mainstream, with floats from banks, insurance companies and the NSW Police. The Governor Marie Bashir opened the festival in 2005, credited the event with fostering "that sense of freedom which springs from considerable diversity within our society - diversity of race, religion, culture and also sexual orientation." Politicians from both sides of politics, as well as Sydney's Lord Major Clover Moore are staunch supporters of Mardi Gras, and often attend. Opposition to the parade and festival still exists among some religious groups, but seems to be waning. Major international stars travel to Sydney to appear at festival events and the Mardi Gras Party, held after the parade for thousands of revellers. In 2012, the festival has a long calendar of varied events and is attracting Sydneysiders and visitors to a host of different occasions, celebrating diverse gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex experience, as part of Sydney's history and it's present.

WikiQueer: Gay Online Encyclopaedia Debuts

WikiQueer, a gay, bi and trans online encyclopaedia has launched publicly this week. The Wiki site began collating content after its soft-launch last year and has now gone live. Unlike Wikipedia, WikiQueer says it will allow dynamic content from existing online GLBT and wiki projects, content geared towards activism around issues, and in-depth information on the GLBT communities which may not presently meet Wikipedia's notability standards. WikiQueer founder and lead administrator Gregory Varnum said: "I felt drawn to the concept of presenting GLBT information via wikis for years. Helping with dozens of pages and projects on Wikipedia and assisting with the development of specialised GLBT wiki projects fulfilled some of that. However, I consistently came back to the need for a truly comprehensive wiki by and for the GLBT communities, free of any community politics."

WikiQueer is backed by The Aequalitas Project, a nonprofit organisation "serving as an incubator for new progressive programs." Founder of POZ Magazine and inaugural member of WikiQueer's global advisory board Sean Strub said: "WikiQueer enables a wealth of information about the GLBT community to be shared. It's a far cry for the time - not so many years ago - when looking up 'homosexual' on the card catalog at a high school library was so often the first step to finding ourselves and each other. I'm looking forward to the creative ways the growing WikiQueer community will develop and utilise the information we share."

The trademark scalp tattoo, sculpted body and enviable c**k made Francois Sagat an instant hit on most gay households. But what sets this much lusted-after porn star apart from many who have gone before him, is his seemingly seemless move into mainstream films. With very little fuss Sagat has taken roles in a string of films, expanding his fan base and earning a greater respect from his peers. His first mainstream role in the 2007 nudity documentary La Nudite Toute Neu set him on a path that would go on to include roles in Saw IV (2009), Bruce LaBruce's LA Zombie (2010), and Homme au Bain (Man in a Bath). The latter is one of two pieces - the other being the documentary Sagat - screening at the Mardi Gras Film Festival and the Melbourne Queer Film Festival.

But while Sagat's transition to arthouse film may look easy to an outsider, for the man himself there's been a lot more work involved. "It takes so much time and the process is so long in each project ... I just live the evolution continually exploring every side of what's possible to do," he told the Star Observer. "I really think I didn't live the transition the way you guys saw it, and after all there is no specific transition in a matter of time. I never wanted to stop porn. My 'big break' was seen as retirement, but absolutely not. There were two new projects that were kind of big on terms of publicity and image - Bruce LaBruce and Christophe Honore - but we were staying in something still very homoerotic. It was really no big deal for me, maybe for the press though. I just don't see any reason to continue porn the same way nowadays. It is not interesting any more and I will give myself five more years."

Surprisingly, Sagat shies away from being tagged an artist. In fact he outright rejects the label. "I'm just experimenting in life and sell my image in different ways," he said. "Pretending to be an artist with such a weak background would be insulting for some of the people and creators I respect. The documentary (Sagat) suggested that a few aspects of my personality were hidden from before, a sensibility, and I agree. But art? I don't see that. But so long as there is a camera, you always give something a little bit more controlled, even if you are trying to be as honest as you can. I think there is still too much of the glitter and porn aspect in this documentary, and that makes it a bit frustrating. But the energy and rhythm and very good." While Sagat hasn't had a film offer since 2010, he is still optimistic about his future outside porn. "I go with the wind. You'll see very soon. In April I have something really good for the eyes and for the ears I will pull out of the box. It is very promising, well, I'm happy with it," he said. "But outside that, there's no specific project."

In a new interview with The Advocate's Brandon Voss, the 50-year-old Hollywood hunk comes clean about those paparazzi rumours while revealing intimate details of his so-called "bromance" with Oceans Eleven co-star Brad Pitt and speaking at length about his much-publicised support for marriage equality. "I think it's funny, but the last thing you'll ever see me do is jump up and down, saying, 'These are lies!' That would be unfair and unkind to my good friends in the gay community," Clooney said. "I'm not going to let anyone make it seem like being gay is a bad thing. My private life is private, and I'm very happy in it. What does it hurt if someone thinks I'm gay? I'll be long dead and there will still be people who say I was gay. I don't give a shit."

As for his relationship with Pitt, Clooney clarified that while the pair is frequently photographed together at award shows and other events, "the truth is that we see each other very rarely, maybe a couple of times a year." He went on to note, "I've had great fun spending time with my friend again over the awards season. Not only do I enjoy him as a person and respect his talent, but I also love what he does in the world. I can't speak highly enough about how hard he works at making the world better."

So why does The Descendants star - who will next be seen in Dustin Lance Black's play 8, about California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage - feel so passionate about marriage equality? "It's always been this albatross that stood out to me as the final leg of the civil rights movements," he told Voss. "Well before Prop. 8, I've made the point that every time we stood against equality we've been on the wrong side of history. It's the same kind of argument they made when they didn't want blacks to serve in the military, or when they didn't want blacks to marry whites. One day the marriage equality fight will look as archaic as George Wallace standing on the University of Alabama steps keeping James Hood from attending college because he was black."

A mixed martial artist who will be on the upcoming season of reality show The Ultimate Fighter has been outed as a former model for the gay website Sean Cody, Adult Video News reported. Dakota Cochrane, 25, who went under the handle 'Danny', started performing for Sean Cody model in 2008 and had participated in solo scenes as well as hardcore scenes with other male actors. "It's definitely a decision I regret," Cochrane told MMAFighting.com. "If I would have known what would happen I definitely wouldn't have done it. But I had money issues and I needed help. I went there to do pictures, and they started throwing pretty high numbers in front of me. I didn't really think. It was a big mistake."

When Cochrane applied for the reality show he told producers about his porn past in an audition tape. "I think it's a little bit courageous for both of us," he said. "I could just hide in a hole and no one would know except for those people close to me. And to them, I was up front. I let them know right away so it wasn't anything that could come back and bite them in the butt. I think maybe they respected that a little bit. I think some people judge against it, some people will be OK with it. Some people will want me to get my butt kicked, and hopefully others will respect what I'm trying to do."

The fighter says he is not gay but told MMAFighting.com that he earned about $80,000 from doing gay porn, which he made while he was attending the University of Nebraska-Kearney. "Every time I was down there, I hated it," Cochrane said. He stopped performing once he told his girlfriend Lacey Sechtem, who asked him to stop. Since doing gay porn, Cochrane married Sechtem and has become the father of two children. The Ultimate Fighting Championship president, Dana White, said that the organisation would welcome a gay athlete. "I'll tell you right now, if there was a gay fighter in UFC, I wish he would come out," White said. "I couldn't care less if there's a gay fighter in the UFC. There probably is and there's probably more than one. I mean, it's 2012. Give me a break."

Sgt Brandon Morgan of Oakdale, California shared the kiss with partner back on US soil and posted the photo to the Gay Marines Facebook page, where is attracted thousands of 'likes' and spread virally across the internet. Sgt Brandon published a post on his Facebook page saying: "To everyone who has responded in a positive way. My partner and I want to say thank you. Dalan, the giant in the photo, can't believe how many shares and likes we have gotten on this. We didn't do this to get famous, or something like that we did this cause after three deployments and four years knowing each other, we finally told each other how we felt. In December, Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta returned home from service on USS Oak Hill and won an on-board raffle to be the first to kiss her partner, Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell when they docked. In September 2011, the ban on openly gay and lesbian US troops was lifted after nearly two decades in effect. The law, known as Don't Ask, Don't Tell, prohibited military personnel from discriminating against or harassing closeted homosexual or bisexual service members or applicants, while barring openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual persons from military service. It was passed in 1993.

According to reports on Facebook and Twitter, Dror Barak, aka Roman Ragazzi, has died of an apparent suicide on February 25 at the age of thirty-eight. Barak most recently appeared in a fashion story in the February issue of Out, titled New Yorks Finest, photographed by Marcelo Krasilcic. The former Israeli military trainer was outed in 2007 by New York Post's Page Six while working at the Israeli consulate, the ensuing scandal caused him to resign. Later that year, he started a personal training and fitness company called Freedom Fitness. According to GayPornBlog, Raging Stallion head Chris Ward (who named Roman Ragazzi Stallion's Man of the Year in 2008) said, "He was probably the hottest man I have ever filmed - a massive man of pure beauty, intelligence and kindness. Time to kill means time to think. And he tried to avoid doing too much of that nowadays. Duncan has exceeded the former boyband member shelf-life by several years. By rights he should be on the holiday camp circuit like his former Blue colleague Simon Webbe or doing panto like another former member of Blue, Antony Costa.

He is 31 now, but barely seems to have aged in the decade since Blue first hit the charts with their infectious and inoffensive pop tunes. He still has the golden looks that made him the heartthrob of the band. When he appears on stage, people collectively sigh with lust. But appearances, as Duncan knows better than most, can be deceiving. He was once perceived as the Lothario of the group and had plenty of rumoured high profile conquests. But last year he admitted that he is bisexual and has dated men as well as women. We're a cynical lot. There are those who claimed Duncan made his admission only to promote Blue's one-off reunion gig in the summer. And there are those who insist that Duncan must be gay and the he used the bisexual tag to keep his female fans sweet.

But whatever you throw at Duncan, he has been a hundred times harder on himself. He says the confusion about his sexuality, combined with the death of his grandparents, a former girlfriend becoming pregnant with his baby, and the breakup of Blue, led to a deep depression. "For a long time was head was so mixed up I didn't know what was going on," he says. "The band were so huge and we were everywhere. I didn't quite know who I was and I didn't have a moment to sit down and figure it out. Then there was the fact that I had a daughter on the way - that wasn't planned, her mother and I weren't even together. And when Blue split up it really hit me. I was put on anti-depressents. I would go and see my psychiatrist and I would be in there crying and shaking. Then I'd walk out and people would say, 'Hi Duncan, can I have your autograph?'"

The confusion over his sexuality was particularly tough. Although he was brought up by his single mother - his father walked out on her when she was pregnant, telling her to have an abortion - he had a staunch Catholic upbringing. "My grandparents were very strict Catholics - They were insistent about me going to church. I was an alter boy and it was drummed into me: 'If you don't do what you are supposed to do, something bad will happen. I had Catholic guilt for many years." However, after finally admitting his bisexuality, "I felt like the pressure had gone," he says. "I'd had in my head that everyone was going to leave me, no one was going to talk to me. When the story came out, the reaction I got was so positive. People I didn't expect to contact me said lovely things and people were writing beautiful letters saying that I'd really helped them." However, coming out was not the end of his problems.

He says that as he started feeling stronger he decided to come off his antidepressant, Seroxat. But the side effects of coming off made him feel worse than ever. Duncan says: "I was on something like 40 milligrams a day and the doctor said you can't just stop them. It took me about a year to get off them and I was so ill trying to do it. I was working on The National Lottery show, and I was getting panic attacks live on TV reading out the numbers and just about keeping it together. Inside I was thinking, 'I can't do this.'" In all respects, Duncan is now, to use therapy speak, in a much better space.

Presently single, he insists: "I have never been gay. I have always found women attractive. I have a lot of gay friends and they would not like the idea of making love to a woman - I'm not like that." As well as battling his addiction to Seroxat, the singer says that exactly a year ago he "almost went insane" when he was out of work for two months. Duncan now supports three households - as well as himself, he looks after his mother and Claire Granger, mother to his adored daughter Tianie, four. He is fulfilling a lifelong ambition by opening a role - as the hunky but dim Warner Huntington III - in Legally Blonde, which opened in the West End and stars Sheridan Smith as Elle Woods. There are also ambitions to bring back Blue. He could be all smarmy, plastic and egocentric, as so many pop stars are, but he is charming, surprisingly candid and so grateful for his good luck - and, in a refreshingly old-fasioned admission, he says he thanks God for it every day.

The couple dated for two years before entering into a civil partnership at the Old Royal Navel College in Greenwich in January, 2007. Cumming and Shaffer remarried in New York in January, 2012, the fifth anniversary of their London wedding. Once described as "a frolicky pansexual sex symbol for the new millennium," Cumming has stated that he considers himself bisexual, "although the pendulum has obviously swung." Previous relationships include an eight-year marriage to actress Hilary Lyon, a two-year relationship with actress Saffron Burrows, and a six-year relationship with theatre director Nick Philippou. After his civil partnership with Shaffer, when asked if he was monogamous, he stated, "I don't believe that monogamy is feasible." A gay male character on British TV who's actually properly, seriously hot. Seldom does such a guy crop up. Thus, when he does, it's still a bit of an event, right? Meet sprightly Northerner Sam Jackson, the brand spanking new secret weapon of Skins, E4's flagship, BAFTA award-winning teen drama. He plays the aggressively promiscuous Alex, the sexiest gay boy on telly since, well, Mitch Hewer's straight boy-seducing Maxxie danced off into the Skins sunset in 2007. We first met Sam on a set visit to the show a few issues back, in a filthy old warehouse on the outskirts of Bristol. We had to endure the sight of him locking-lips with another nubile-bodied young man across several takes - sans shirt.

His topless form, loitering around east London, similarly transfixes us two months later on his GT cover shoot. He braves bitter winter winds (this time in nothing but avid bright baggy trousers, slung low on his waist), his bare back against exposed brick, sucking suggestively on a cigarette for the camera. They're powerful displays of homoeroticism from one so young; and from a heterosexual actor no less. Not that the fresh-faced Sam let's this little fact sever his connection to the character. "I put a lot of myself into Alex," he tells me, I think, quite bravely. "I feel like I can relate to him. I do understand gay men a lot more."

It's a daring and freethinking statement in light of some of the bad attitudes that persist among many Alex's age; including, even, some of his own friends from back home. "Some of my mates are massive homophobes," he says, before admitting that only a few people know of his upcoming role. "They're a football team of lads who are big on their camaraderie ... There's a lot of stuff like that. I'll probably get some stick for it. They'll take the mick for a couple of weeks. Do I hope it changes their opinions? I'd like to think so. It'd be amazing, definitely. Some gay men are misunderstood. I honestly feel like that."

Despite his bold comments - and his utter seduction of the camera - I can't help but notice Sam's more than a little bit nervous in an interview scenario. But who could blame him: he's a complete newbie to the attention and scrutiny a role in Skins brings with it. In fact, when he's not on location or on the publicity drive, his live is strikingly normal. "It's like two different worlds," he says. "I go down to Bristol with my friends - the Skins cast are like my friends now - and then I go back to Leeds and go back to school and do maths." He laughs boyishly, "I did a maths exam on Monday - and out of 62 marks guess how many marks I got? Four. Four marks. When I go back to school I'm not thinking about school ... I'm thinking about when I'm next filming."

Singer Adam Lambert will join British rock band Queen in July for one performance, and guitarist Brian May says Freddie Mercury would approve. The 30-year-old Lambert will join Queen at the Sonisphere Festival in Knebworth, England on July 17. The iconic rock band currently includes May and drummer Roger Taylor. Taylor and May formed the band Smile, which frontman Mercury altered to Queen when he joined. Mercury died in 1991 of complications due to AIDS. "Judging by by incoming mail, this decision will make a lot of people very happy," May said in making the announcement on the band's official website. "It's a worthy challenge for us, and I'm sure Adam would meet with Freddie's approval!"

Lambert first discussed joining Queen ay the Sonisphere Festival in England in comments made to the UK's Daily Star. "The intention is to pay tribute to Freddie (Mercury) and the band by singing some great fucking songs," he said. "It's to keep the music alive for the fans and give it an energy that Freddie would have been proud of." Lambert tweeted earlier this month, "I haven't confirmed any guest appearances, I was talking about the EMA's." Rio's Carnival Now a Big Draw for Gay Tourists

It took Dutch tourist Adriaan little time after landing in Rio De Janeiro to pick out his favourite spot during Carnival, the five-day part that officially ended Wednesday. A 35-year-old graphic designer, he found his niche at the gay meeting point on Ipanema Beach, where palm fronds and rainbow flags wave in the balmy ocean breeze, and tanned, well-muscled young men strut about in swim suits that reveal more than they conceal. Conversation failed to distract the tall, blonde visitor from his careful perusal of the bathers rinsing off salt water at an open-air shower in a ritual that was equal parts bathing and public display of bodies toned to perfection. "This is just beautiful," he said while sitting on the beach in the gayest neighbourhood of a city routinely ranked as a top destination for gay tourists.

"We have a lot of gay people at home, it's very normal, no big deal. But it's not like this: so many people, in the sun, partying together. This is like a candy shop!" Adriaan, who preferred not to give his last name to keep his Carnival carousing off the internet, was one of thousands of foreigners drawn by the heady sensuality and live-and-let-live attitude displayed by residents year-around, and especially at Carnival time. The love goes both ways: Rio officials are trying to attract more visitors such as Adriaan, who bring an enormous amount of money into the economy. "The city of Rio doesn't discriminate. It is in its essence welcoming," said Rio Secretary of Tourism Antonio Figueira de Mello. "Carnival is when the city shows that side most clearly. It's a party that welcomes the world." By all accounts, this year's festivities lived up to the expectations, despite a police strike that threatened to derail the event, but was called off before the glitter started flying.

The daylong street parties drew hundreds of thousands, while glamorous parades took over at night in the city's Sambadrome stadium, where Rio's most beautiful men and women shimmed atop elaborate floats dressed only in strategically placed feathers and sequins. The final numbers of visitors, gay or straight, are not yet in, but city officials are saying this was one of the most successful, and diverse, parties yet. The major's office last year created a diversity department headed by Carlos Tufvesson, a gay, multilingual fashion designer, to work with gay tourists, researching their needs and launching campaigns against homophobia and for safe sex during Carnival. According to the tourism industry, more than a quarter of the the approximately 3 million tourists who flood into Rio every summer are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, and 75 percent are young men between the ages of 20 and 35. They stay in the city an average of five days and spend about $200 per day, more than double the $74 a day that heterosexual tourists spend.

Reality, however, isn't always as sunny as Ipanema's gay beach and bars would suggest. On February 13, days before Carnival, two gay Brazilian tourists were assaulted by taxi drivers on their way out of the city's international airport. The civil rights organisation Grupo Gay da Bahia registered 282 occurrences of discrimination in Brazil based on sexual orientation in 2011, ranging from insults to 87 of physical aggression. French tourist Frederic Du Pont, 36, on his fourth visit to Rio, said he has heard the occasional anti-gay slur on a city bus or away from the wealthy south side, but he's never felt threatened. "Sometimes I worry a little bit, I'm not sure how far I can go," he said. "Maybe I look at thew wrong guy in the eyes a little too long, maybe they're not gay. But I've never been harassed." Du Pont, like many visitors, said he still can't pull off the easy Carioca way of approaching a total stranger and within minutes extracting a kiss. Even on his latest return trip he was a little shy about diving into the sweat-soaked, percussion-driven throng at Ipanema during Carnival. Even so, Du Pont said he'd had no trouble finding friends. "There is so much seduction everywhere," he said. "You are in overdrive, all the time. This is Carnival."

Heroes With Hardons: Big Book of Class Comics

Patrick Fillion, like millions of gay men, has always been inspired by comic books. OK, turned on. Unlike the rest of us, however, he did something about it. He founded Class Comics, which gives expression to the hidden meaning behind the "straight" (ironic quotes) comics. In his introduction to Heroes With Hardons he oddly doesn't discuss what I thought would be the obvious point of reference for most gay men. Lets face it: We all began by fantasising about those phenomenally ripped and muscular DC stars like Superman. If anything, the DC Comics writers have been riffing on the homoeroticism of their work for decades, with the live-in situation of Batman and his young, cute sidekick Robin. Intentional? Or Not? That's been a question that scholars, right-wing Christians and gay activists have been debating nearly as long. Whatever.

What Fillion and his stable of extremely gifted artists, so well shown off in this handsome collection, have done is to take our unfilled fantasies and filled them, with some extremely well-filled-out men of various stripes. Generally, the characters look like Superman without his leotard, and, as the title implies, with his super-huge flag usually flying at full-staff. It also, like nearly all the comics here, is multi-ethnic, a real improvement on most DVD porn, which remains all-too monochromatic. One of the disconnects that I love about this book is what a turn-on the pictures are. Part of this is because the men here can be so idealised, so absolutely perfect. Part of it is the situation in which they find themselves. And a lot of it is the way the artists riff on those ultra-tight super-hero costumes. By the way, like Marvel and DC heroes, these guys are almost uniformly smooth, although there are a few manscaped bodies. As benefits an anthology, the stories here are ongoing in their comic-book form. As with mainstream comics, the stories are self-contained.

'Inevitable' Says Aussie PM of Marriage Equality

The removal of discrimination against same-sex couples wanting to marry in Australia is only a matter of time, the Prime Minister Julia Gillard has told marriage equality advocates. During a dinner with three same-sex couples at The Lodge last night, Gillard said she believed marriage equality in Australia is "inevitable". Reforms in a growing number of countries is placing increasing pressure on other nations to follow suit, Gillard said. Among the couples at the dinner were Sharon Dane, 54, and Elaine Crump, 53. "Although she said she opposed marriage equality, we were given hope that her opposition was not immovable," they said. The pair has exchanged vows in Canada, where same-sex marriage is permitted.

Sydney couple Sandy Miller and Louise Burke brought their two sons - Matthew, 12 and Dylan, 9 - to the dinner. "The Prime Minister made the point that the more countries that embrace this reform, the clearer it becomes that this is a reform whose time has come," they said. The third couple was John Dini and Steve Russell. They both reside in Gillard's electorate. The men made it clear that support for gay marriage was widespread, including in the Prime Minister's own electorate of Lalor. Australian Marriage Equality convenor Alex Greenwich, also in attendance, said the outcome of the dinner was positive and gave cause for optimism. "The Prime Minister listened carefully to the case for equality, and gave us all hope when she said the reform would happen one day." The dinner was won at a charity action last year by Australian Marriage Equality and GetUp!

True Blood hunk Joe Manganiello is on the cover of Out Magazine's March 2012 issue. Here's just a little of what the 35-year-old actor had to share:

Joe Manganiello was a theatre-loving jock who defended the arty kids in school, but never felt he belonged to any any clique. Then he was cast in True Blood and found his feet - all four of them. Manganiello's Greek-sculpture physique worked well with the part. Manganiello doesn't mind that this is the second big role that requires him to show a lot of skin. "Somebody's gotta do it," he says. "Am I afraid of being typecast? I couldn't care less." "I was a pretty gothic, dark kid, obsessed with monsters," Manganiello says of his Pittsburg childhood. "I loved Halloween and skulls. I was just that kid. My first concert was Pantera, Sepultura, and Biohazard. I loved industrial like Ministry and Revolting Cocks. I was in love with the chick bassist in White Zombie with fluorescent green hair. It's great that, for a living. I'm associated with full moons and wolves!"

On Interviewing a former make stripper for Magic Mike research:

"All they guys he worked with were dead or in rehab, but it was the time of his life - this insanely destructive lifestyle, this club life. It was sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll ... and getting paid to take your clothes off and have sex."

On nudity in True Blood:

"As far as the butt cheek stuff goes, it just makes sense. It's not gratuitous; it's realistic. If you're a werewolf and you transform, you lose everything and there are your butt cheeks. The show is a deconstruction of supernatural creatures. It's not like other werewolf projects, where you magically reappear with tiny jean shorts on."

On loving his role on True Blood:

"It utilises each part of my eclectic personality. There's the kid who loves monsters, and I can be athletic, but I also love history and I can research wolves and Southern dialects. The dialogue is so rick - it's Tennessee Williams with Chekhovian layers - and that fulfills my bookwormy playwright side. I'm so fortunate. Plus, I get to have a beard all the time."

Sydney's Benjamin Michael for Mr Gay World

Twenty-nine year old Sydneysider Benjamin Michael has been selected as our home-grown candidate to represent Australia in the coveted Mr Gay World contest. The annual pageant is taking place in Johannesburg in April, after hot South African contestant Francois Nel won it last year. The buff model and actor is currently studying to be a TV producer, says he loved the outdoors and is a keen snowboarder. "I am very proud and feel very lucky to be able to represent Australia in the Mr Gay World competition," he tells Same Same. "It's a great opportunity to meet a lot of new friends from around the world and show them a little bit of what us Aussie boys are like," he winks. Activities planned during the Mr Gay World competition include a drive with game rangers in safari vehicles, a sports challenge, panel interviews, a visit to the Apartheid Museum, and a whole lot of amazing activities that truly show off South Africa as 'the rainbow nation', along with charity activities.

"Apart from making new friends I'm looking forward to the different challenges we are doing," says our eager Aussie. "Going on safari and spending a day on an obstacle course really appeal to my adventurous side and going to help disadvantaged children will be amazing for me to be able to contribute to kids lives, even if it makes them smile for the day. I have never done anything like this before and I am very excited. I really hope that I can do us proud and this competition has made me more aware of the community groups here who need our help in making the lives of people who are struggling in many different areas of their lives better." Being an ambassador for Australia's gay citizens is a big weight on his shoulders but he appears to have the right attitude. "I hope that I can show them some of our Aussie spirit," he enthuses. "We have a great reputation of being easy going, fun loving and genuine people and I won't let us down."

21 Jump Street co-stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill enjoyed some beach time recently in Sydney, Australia at Bondi Beach. The pair splashed around in the water with the locals, and Jonah found himself in a bit of trouble getting stuck in a rip and had to have some assistance from local life guards. Channing meanwhile acknowledges his good looks, but he doesn't make career decisions to try and detract away from his looks and be taken seriously as an actor but looks for what makes a good story. He said: "I won a genetic lottery, my parents are very good-looking people and so ... But no, don't make decisions on how people see you, just do f**king good stories and characters. Don't do them because you think they're smart or because they counteract some other things you've played.
